The Veil Main Quest Walkthrough

The Disease Era is the first main questline: it teaches combat, gates your first boss behind enchanting, and ends at the Weeping Crypt. Here is the order, the costs, and the step most players get stuck on.

Quick answer: the early main quest runs 30 kills → blacksmith (100 silver) → enchant with a gem → first boss → Ancient Bones → Hiveling Titan → suspicious eye in the Weeping Crypt. Two costs gate the route: 100 silver for the blacksmith and 1 gem for the enchant. Do not skip the gem step — the boss will not trigger without it.

The steps in order

StepWhat to doCost / gate
1 · GladeKill 30 monsters around the starting forest. Night spawns are denser but drain sanity.None
2 · BlacksmithPay the blacksmith to start the weapon work.100 silver (reduced from 200 in a launch patch)
3 · EnchantBring a gem — ruby, sapphire or quartz, not a tome — and enchant the weapon.1 gem + the enchant fee
4 · First bossThe enchant triggers the first boss fight; the reward is a weapon with a lightning skill.Fight
5 · Ancient BonesCollect bones from the nocturnal stalker in the labyrinth.Night run
6 · Hiveling TitanElite hive enemy on the same stretch; its chest can hold festered meat.20%+ damage contribution to open boss chests
7 · Suspicious EyeIn the Weeping Crypt, take the eye from the skeleton and find the runner who carried it deeper.Story step

The step everyone gets stuck on

The suspicious-eye step is the classic wall: the skeleton on the floor of the Weeping Crypt hands over the eye and then dies, and the quest asks you to find the runner who carried the eye into the crypt. The runner is inside the crypt rather than at the entrance — players consistently report finding him in the second room, near the rubble beside the skeleton that points toward the elevator. If the room looks empty, sweep the side passages before leaving; the marker alone will not walk you to him.

Where the silver and the gem come from

  • Silver: the 30-kill step plus chests along the route usually covers the 100-silver fee; a trinket loop covers it faster.
  • Gems: town trinket spots and the gem routes on the Gems page — a tome is not a substitute.
  • Enchant pricing was cut from 200 to 100 silver within days of launch; older videos still quote 200.

After the first boss

The questline continues into the Pale, the deeper region behind the labyrinth gates, where the Mastery trainers and the endgame loot live. Treat the Disease Era route above as the first era only — later steps assume you can survive night runs and have started collecting legendary weapons (see the legendary weapons page).

Evidence boundary: the step order and the costs come from release-week full run-throughs and official patch notes; the runner location is community-documented and may shift after a map patch. Re-check the quest log before assuming a route is broken.

FAQ

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

What is the main quest in The Veil?

The Disease Era questline: 30 kills, the blacksmith, an enchant with a gem, the first boss, Ancient Bones, the Hiveling Titan and the suspicious eye in the Weeping Crypt.

How much does the blacksmith cost in The Veil?

100 silver. A launch patch reduced the fee from 200 silver, so older guides quote the wrong price.

Where is the runner who carried the eye into the crypt?

Inside the Weeping Crypt, in the second room near the rubble beside the skeleton that points toward the elevator — not at the entrance.

Do I need a gem to progress the main quest?

Yes. The first boss is gated behind enchanting a weapon, and enchanting needs a gem (ruby, sapphire or quartz — not a tome).
