Tier List

The Veil Race Tier List

All 10 races ranked S to C from release-day gameplay, with use-case tiers and reasons.

Methodology: this ranking is built from release-day gameplay footage of all 10 races, cross-checked across launch-week guides. It ranks general usefulness now — numbers are gameplay-verified, letter grades are editorial. Rarity does not equal tier: a Legendary you almost never get is worth less than a Rare you can actually roll. Patches are landing weekly, so this list is re-checked after every balance change.

The tiers

TierRacesWhy
SVeilborneThe only legendary: lower weave cap means faster full stacks, damage and speed on every stack, plus a night-only skill nobody else has. Its catch: Legendary rarity is the only thing holding it back.
AGoblinLuck plus cast damage and faster spell cycling — the caster's best everyday roll.
AGemheadThe summoner's best friend: flat summon damage and health.
AUnderlingFireproof casters: +25% fire resistance and the hardest-hitting magic-build race.
AObeliteA living tank — resistance, knockback and a stone-form active — if you can live with the speed penalty.
BMushlingA regeneration race that shipped weak and got patched mid-launch; healing and stamina trade-offs.
BHumanA flat +5 max HP per prestige that scales into the endgame; no downside, no upside.
BWraithA dodge proc — one free miss roughly every 20 hits taken; useful but unreliable.
CSkeletonResistance loss outweighs its summon bonus once Gemhead exists.
CHivelingThe defensive bonus flips with time of day while the attack speed penalty never turns off.

Build-specific picks

  • Summoners: Gemhead (best), with Veilborne a general pick if you can land it.
  • Cast/magic builds: Underling (+25% fire resistance, cast damage) or Goblin (luck, cast damage, cooldown).
  • Tanks: Obelite — resistance and knockback at a speed cost.
  • PvP caution: Sky Sentinel's burn damage is countered by Underling's fire resistance, so race choice matters if you expect PvP.

Patch risk & evidence

Tier positions are evidence-based for release week: Skeleton and Hiveling sit at the bottom because their penalties outweigh their bonuses in the current build; Mushling was patched mid-launch already. Rarity tiers for several races remain unconfirmed (see the races hub), and a patch that changes resistance or summon stats moves this list.

This is an editorial ranking, not an official statement. No unexplained letter grades: every position above carries its reason, and the underlying race effects are gameplay-verified.

FAQ

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

What is the best race in The Veil?

Veilborne is the overall S-tier (legendary); Gemhead and Underling are the strongest build-specific picks.

Why is Skeleton ranked low?

Its +10% summon damage and speed come with −10% resistance, a trade that loses value once Gemhead exists.

Is the tier list based on real data?

Rankings combine gameplay-verified race effects with editorial use-case judgment; the list is re-checked after every balance patch.

Is rarity the same as tier?

No — rarity is roll chance, tier is usefulness. A common Human scales fine; a legendary you never roll is worth less.
