Is The Veil Permadeath?

The Veil is a punishing game with a maze that bites back — but a death does not delete anything. Here is exactly what you lose, and what you keep.

Quick answer: no — The Veil is not permadeath. Dying costs one prestige level and a respawn walk; it does not delete your character, class, race, inventory or quest progress. Your account holds three character slots. Reaching zero sanity is one of the ways to die, which is why the maze punishes unprepared runs so hard.

What is never lost

  • Your character: your account has three character slots, and a death never deletes a slot.
  • Class and race: both survive death untouched (rerolling is the only thing that changes your race).
  • Inventory and progress: gear, materials and quest progress stay with you through the respawn.
  • Badges and achievements: boss badges and event unlocks are account-level and permanent.

Why deaths still hurt

  • Prestige is the one thing you can lose. It is the +HP / +damage power system earned from boss kills, Star Fruits and PvP — and the −1 on death bites hardest when you are close to a cap. Full rules.
  • High prestige paints a target: outlaws hunt high-prestige players in PvP zones — the risk grows as you do.
  • The walk back is the real tax: a death during a deep maze run undoes the best part of an hour. Unlock and set waypoints to shorten it (travel guide).

The sanity connection

Sanity drains at night, and hitting zero sanity kills you — the same −1 prestige rule applies. The clock is 0.5 drain per second with a 360-second day/night cycle, so every long run is a budgeting problem: campfires and potions (sold at Echo Hold) are the recovery loop. The full numbers are on the sanity guide.

Evidence boundary: the no-permadeath rule, the −1 prestige cost and the three character slots are cross-checked from current guides and developer statements. No item-loss system is documented — if a future patch changes that, this page updates first.
